At times one might mistakenly set shortcut files (.lnk) to be opened by a particular program eg Firefox or notepad etc or maybe it was set by a virus. You'd notice that your shortcut links on your desktop would have the icon of the particular program as seen in the pic below. By default, Set Associations doesn't offer "Unknown Application" as an option in Default programs

How to fix setting a default program for shortcuts [.lnk]


Follow the steps below to fix setting a default program for shortcut files [.lnk]

  1. Press WinKey + R
  2. Type regedit and press enter
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk

  4. OpenWithList should contain only:
    Code:

    (Default) | REG SZ | (value not set)

  5. OpenWithProgids should contain only:
    Code:

      (Default) | REG SZ | (value not set)
      lnkfile | REG_NONE | (zero-length binary value)

  6. Make sure there is no subkey/subfolder
    Code:

      UserChoice (if you see it, right click on the UserChoice > Delete)

  7. Restart your system


Important Notice
  • You can apply the same technique for other file extension types
