Hi everyone,

I would like to seek some help in rooting my MT6580 phone, I have tried using the usual MTK Droid Tools and SP_Tools to make a backup of the phone, I've downloaded a Scatter file online for the MT6580 but i'm not really confident that the backup would work as intended. there for I am seeking some advice and help on this matter.

here's the dump of my phone from MTK Droid Tools

Hardware : MT6580
Model : INTENSE_METAL_2
Build number : FIREFLYMOBILE_INTENSEMETAL2_V005_20170407
Build date UTC : 20170407-002002
Android  v : 6.0
Baseband v: MOLY.WR8.W1449.MD.WG.MP.V57.P22, 2017/04/07 08:12
Kernel v : 3.18.19+ (user@linux-user) (gcc version 4.8 (GCC) ) #2 SMP  Fri Apr 7 08:58:58 CST 2017

I have also attached the Scatter file that i have downloaded for anyone's reference.

the main reason for me wanting to root this phone is to remove the GStore malware that i think was installed as a system app and came packaged with the phone.

hoping for some help on this one.

best regards,

Elvin

Dump your firmware in scatter format using miracle, refer to https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-15723.html
Rename boot.bin to boot.img and follow the guide @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21427.html to root your device.
Flash the patched boot.img using fastboot or Miracle Box

Hi again,

I have tried the tutorial that you've posted, I have installed the correct Drivers for the phone but as i've connected the phone, the preloader driver is detected and starts to install then after 2-3 seconds the phone reconnects and starts charging. I'm also having the same case with my smartwatch DZ09, as soon as i connect the device to my PC it detects the preloader and installs it then the phone instantly reconnects and starts charging itself making the preloader driver installation error. not sure whats causing the issue.

any ideas? TIA.

Hi Again,

I have followed the instructions provided by innagee to the "T" but without luck my system is still re-connecting my phone every 2-3 seconds, I've also tried it on a newly installed win7 and win10 machines have disabled driver signing on both but still it keeps on re-connecting... When I followed the given tutorial the drivers for VCOM was also installed on a different COM port while the VCOM / Preloader drivers from the phone was also being installed on a different COM port,  I have also changed data cables but still it re-connects... Sad

Another approach is via Bootloader (this wipes data)
Setup ADB on your phone using https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-588.html and let me know if the phone gets detected

Hi Guys,

After some trial and error I now have managed to secure and create a back-up of my phone using both GSM Aladdin and Miracle Box, I have also tried rooting the boot.bin using the Magisk Manager tutorial. It created the "patched_boot.img" file as expected, since it was quite late i just had to do the fastboot trick to push the new patched_boot.img [unlocked fasboot via settings and ADB] to my phone after that the phone rebooted and then started the "erasing" procedure.

I'm not sure if that was normal but it's ok as long as it could get a root access. so after everything settled in on my phone... re-installed everything... and tried to check root access via rootchecker, the phone still stays un-rooted, I've tried using ADB and still get cannot root on production build.

is there anything that i've missed in the process?

Undecided

UPDATE:

Just made a cache clear and 2 reboots Magisk now accepts root permissions. I am now trying to install modules on magisk do i need to have a custom recovery for it to work?...
