I unlocked my Tecno Spark KC8's bootloader and flashed a custom recovery (TWRP) before I realized that there was a different process required for MediaTek devices. Now, it is stuck in a boot loop that says

```
Orange State
Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted
Your device will boot in 5 seconds
```

I have installed SPTool on my Ubuntu VM, and downloaded a firmware package (KC8-H6110LMN-P-191006V111). When I load the scatter file (MT6761_Android_scatter.txt) into SPTool, I get

SP FLASH TOOL ERROR: (8417)
The load scatter file is invalid!

I've checked the file, and can't find any glaring issues with it. Can someone please help?

Hello!
Okey your phone have stuck on bootloop because u didn't flash an empty vbmeta.img
So you need to flash that file before flashing any rom or recovery and make sure you have unlocked bootloader.

Now why do you use spflash tool in Ubuntu vm while you have windows? I really don't see the point in that.
Try using windows and if it fails use software download tool.

Hope that helps you.
Note: Unlock bootloader then flash empty vbmeta.img

when flashing, ensure
to check the build number of your device ; see https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-16005.html
to use latest sp flash tool version
to use the DA file for your model ; download @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-23243.html OR better still you could flash using SWD tool as @Chuchu Kim's already pointed out

Thank you both! I A couple more data points I forgot to include initially (sorry, it's been a few weeks since this happened)

* I actually did flash a vb_meta file, but it was for the wrong device. I think it was for Tecno Spark Lite
* I don't have Windows, which is why I'm using Ubuntu (on a Mac host). Is there a supported Linux version of the tool, or should I find a copy of Windows?

you can try the latest version @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-13969.html and don't forget about the da file in my previous reply

Ok I finally got my Windows VM set up, and downloaded SWDTool (V4.1811.23.11) and the KC8's firmware (KC8-H6110LMN-P-191006V111). I launch as admin, load the included scatter file, and press the green button. The device is still in a boot loop, but I hold power and volume up until it powers off.

Once it reboots, there is some action in the SWDTool for 2 seconds. Download Progress reaches 100% in a blue-black gradient, then changes red and says "[01]DA Connection Failed!STATUS_ERR[100%]", and Result says "[01]FAIL(0/8)".

The device itself is still in a boot loop. I have tried all hard key combos I could find online to enter recover mode, but no luck. Is there any other step I may be missing?

look for a way to power off the device before connecting it to the pc for flashing, you can try
hold the power button till the phone turns off, immediately the screen goes off release power button then press and hold both vol buttons together OR you wait till the battery drains completely OR you disassemble the back then disconnect / reconnect the battery
