Press and hold the volume up key, then add the power button and hold them together till the phone gets to the wreck android logo.
When get there, leave the buttons; then first press and hold the power button for about 2-3 seconds then add the volume up key.
You must tune the phone off before you start that.

If it is a stock recovery that your phone is running, you should get that wreck android logo when you press on the volume up key and power button simultaneously.
Have you flashed your phone with a custom recovery?
How did you enter the button combination?
In your explanation of your problem, you mentioned getting to a sleeping wreck logo. Try and get to the sleeping wreck logo, when you get there, proceed from there using the info on the second paragraph of my reply above.
(06-06-2016, 01:48 PM)mensa This is what you should do. Just note the type of recovery your phone is on. If is a custom recovery, simply pressing the phone up key and power button when the phone is off will bootbtye phone into recovery but when it is stock recovery, press and hold down the volume up button and power button simultaneously till the phone boot to the part where you see a dead android logo. When you get there, first press and hold the power button; then add the volume up key to get to recovery mode.
