[Tutorial] How to fix Unknown Baseband, NULL or Invalid IMEI & SIM / Network not detected on MTK

#1
(This post was last modified: 7 hours ago by X3non. )

There are quite a number of problems you could encounter with signal on a Mediatek Android phone. One common problem is the phone being unable to detect your SIM Card(s), unable to detect network nignals (Emergency Mode) or Detecting signals but unable to make calls or even dial shortcodes to check your account balance etc.

What causes Unknown Baseband / IMEI and issues detecting SIM Cards or Network signal on a Mediatek phone?

The primary cause is the wiping / corruption of the Secro and NVRAM (or NVDATA) partition(s). This could occur when you:
  1. Do a factory reset on the phone
  2. Format the phone using SP Flash tool or a Chinese box e.g Miracle Box, Volcano Box, Infinity Chinese Miracle II box etc
  3. Flash a custom ROM or not fully incompatible stock rom / firmware
  4. Tamper with your IMEI using an incompatible IMEI changer
  5. Format your partitions (without restoring) via a custom recovery e.g TWRP

Note:

Easy steps to fix Unknown Baseband version, NULL or Invalid IMEI and SIM cards / Network signal not detected on a Mediatek Android phone

Before you proceed, ensure that your Mediatek phone has a valid Baseband (not NULL Baseband). If your Baseband is unknown then download the firmware for your model @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-9678.html and flash using SP Flash Tool @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-159.html . Flashing the firmware (or at least Secro ) ought to restore Baseband. With Baseband regained, you can then proceed with fixing IMEI

IMEI Repair methods for Newer Mediatek Chipsets and Android versions

Method 1: SN Write Tool (SN Writer) method
See the guide @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-12306.html

Method 2: Maui META method
See the guide @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-12328.html

Method 3: GSM Aladdin box method

Method 4: Chamelephon Root required, works on newer Mediatek chips and Android versions
See the guide @ https://blog.hovatek.com/how-to-fix-null...arshmallow

Engineering Mode Method [Root required; Works on Newer Mediatek chips and Android versions
  1. Download and Install Mobile Uncle (Now called Tool Hero)  then grant superuser permission. You could also use MTK Engineering Mode
  2. Select Engineer mode
  3. Select Engineer mode (MTK)
  4. Navigate to the Connectivity tab
  5. Select CDS information
  6. Select Radio Information
  7. At Phone 1: Insert the command below then click Send at command

    Code:
    AT+EGMR=1,7,"IMEI1"

  8. At Phone 2: Insert the command below then click Send at command

    Code:
    AT+EGMR=1,10,"IMEI2"

  9. If you get an error like "This command is not allowed in user build" then leave a space between AT+ and EGMR as show below

    Code:
AT+ EGMR=The rest of the code

MP0B_001 Method

  1. Download ROM toolbox lite from Playstore
  2. Download IMEI.zip (to create a new IMEI file) then unzip the content of the folder (imei.exe) to a folder on your desktop
  3. In command prompt, navigate to the imei.exe containing folder you just created on your desktop
  4. NOTE
    Code:
cd\ then Enter returns to root directory
cd.. then Enter goes up one directory

  5. cd foldername then Enter navigates to a folder called foldername
  6. A faster method is to open the imei.exe containing folder > Hold down Shift > Right-click on an empty space > Select "Open Command Window here"
  7. When you're inside the imei folder in command prompt, type
    imei.exe <15digit_IMEI_1> <15digit_IMEI_2>
    eg
    Code:
    imei.exe 123456789111111 123456789111124
  8. Press Enter
  9. If both IMEIs you gave are of the correct format, a file named MP0B_001_NEW will be created. Rename it MP0B_001.
  10. Now you can send it to the sd of your phone
  11. Install ROM toolbox lite then go to root explorer
  12. In root explorer, delete the existing MP0B_001 file (located @ device/data/nvram/md/NVRAM/NVD_IMEI) and replace with the one you just created
  13. Long press the new MP0B_001, go to permissions and tick all 9 boxes at the top then select ok (don't tick special pernissions)
  14. Restart your phone
  15. Your SIMs should be detected, IMEI reflect and Baseband version change from unknown to what it should be.
  16. Note that getting this done might not be this direct due to different scenarios but replacing the MP0B_001 file is the ultimate goal in order to fix the issue.

IMEI Replacement Method

This method involves the use of MTK droid tools and is only applicable when your SIM cards are detected but IMEI is invalid or null. To do this:
  1. Download MTK droid tools
  2. Download PdaNet
  3. Enable USB debugging on the phone then connect it to the PC (don't enable mass storage)
  4. Install PdaNet on the PC with the phone connected; you should get a message saying drivers installed successfully.
  5. Extract then launch MTK droid tools on the PC (still with phone connected to PC)
  6. MTK droid tools should detect and display your phones details
  7. Click on IMEI/NVRAM
  8. Supply the IMEI(s) then click replace
  9. Restart your phone if it isn't automatically restarted
  10. Your IMEI issue should have been resolved

NVRAM Restore Method

* Note that you need a working phone of the same model to backup NVRAM first
  1. Download MTK droid tools
  2. Download PdaNet
  3. Enable USB debugging on the GOOD phone then connect it to the PC (don't enable mass storage)
  4. Install PdaNet on the PC with the phone connected; you should get a message saying drivers installed successfully.
  5. Extract then launch MTK droid tools on the PC (still with phone connected to PC)
  6. MTK droid tools should detect and display your phones details
  7. Click IMEI / NVRAM
  8. Click Backup
  9. When backup is complete, open the MTK Folder > BackupNVRAM to confirm that backup was successful
  10. Connect the phone with Basebrand / IMEI error to the PC still with MTK droid tools open
  11. Still under IMEI / NVRAM, click Restore
  12. Select the appropriate files from the windows that pop up
  13. Reboot the phone once the procedure is complete

You'll see it on the phone's body (after removing the battery) / carton or you can just use any valid IMEI

HOW I SURVIVE/FIX AN UNKNOWN BASEBAND/RADIO/INVALID-IMEI ON MY TECNO M3

So it all goes like this, i just accidentally execute the init binary, in seconds all i know is my phone rebooting itself with unknown baseband. surprise to me , what goes wrong?. so i went after the su log file to read the log and i was able to verify what happen, when init tries to creates the radio folder (/protect_f and /protect_s) which contains the radio files, it founds out that it was busy so it delete the former one to create the new one deleting the old one with the files but hopefully i've once backup the whole init and the radio folder to my sdcard . so all i have to do is copy the files (MP0D_000 and ST33A004 from the /protect_s/md/ directory that i copied ) to /protect_f/md/ directory , which automagically create another twin file of ST33A004 in /protect_s/md/ directory called ST33B004 and immediately my phone alerting that it has detected a network so all i do is to confirm by clicking ok. thatz all

Apply this method only if you restore your IMEI and it doesnt work or if you have an unknown baseband/radio problem/invalid imei.........!!!
