Ok, as I don't have the stock recovery how do I proceed?
I have access to Philz, fastboot, but pretty much nothing else. (see first post)

Thanks,

Thanks,

if you have another device same model as yours, you can dump the recovery from the working phone then flash onto your device using fastboot
then flash the zip using the recovery (check https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-17581-page-2.html if the device is the same as yours, then you can try his stock recovery image)

OR
convert your system.***.dat file into flashable img using the guide @ http://www.stupdroid.com/2016/10/tool-sy...e-img.html
then using the scatter file from your update package, flash boot and system.img using SP flash tool

Perfect!
That let me load the original OS back, which now loads fine. Is there a donate button anywhere I should be using? Tongue

Is the phone now in a state where I can attempt rooting again via the original method (that is Philz/Super but selecting NO when asked at the end to root)?

Our forum services are free. Just tell your friends about Hovatek. Dont forget to download our mobile app @ https://app.hovatek.com

Yes, if you flashed boot and system and you're now able to boot to homescreen, then yes you can attempt rooting again.
remember to select NO when asked to root too

Yup, that worked a charm. Phones rooted and booting, (letting me kick TouchPal and the rest of the adware off with avengeance and get on with actual development work.)

Thanks kindly to you and the rest of this forum for saving me from having a 80euro brick.
