The Tecno Phantom 6 Plus (A9) is powered by the MT6797 (Mediatek Helio P20) SoC and ships with Android 6 (Marshmallow) upgradable to Android 7 (Nougat). For those who have not yet upgraded their Tecno Phantom 6 Plus from Marshmallow to Nougat (A9-H971A-N1-170725V72),  simply follow the guide @ https://blog.hovatek.com/how-to-update-t...pdate-zip/ .
For those who have successfully upgraded to Nougat and are looking to root, this guide will explain how.

How can I root my Tecno Phantom 6 Plus (Nougat) ?

Method 1 - Flash Philz Recovery using SP flash tool (RECOMMENDED)

Procedure
  • Install VCOM drivers on your PC using https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-440.html
  • Download SuperSU 2.79.zip at [ Login / Register to download free]
  • Copy SuperSU.zip to both the phone’s SD card and internal storage
  • Download any scatter file for Phantom 6 Plus @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-19546.html
  • Download Philz for Phantom 6 Plus (Nougat) ported by Team Hovatek @ [ Login / Register to download free]
  • Create a new folder on your desktop named Hovatek
  • Extract the scatter file and the Philz recovery into the Hovatek folder
  • Flash the Philz recovery.img to the phone using SP Flash tool @ https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-159.html
  • Boot the phone into recovery mode using Volume up button + Power button (see https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-479.html )
  • In Philz recovery, you use the Volume buttons to navigate and Power button to select
  • Select Install Zip
  • Navigate to the location of the SuperSU2.79.zip on the SD Card and select it
  • Wait till flashing is complete
  • If you are prompted to fix root, select No
  • Reboot the phone normally
  • Confirm Root by installing and running Root Checker @ https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...heck&hl=en

Method 2 - Flash Patched Boot using Fastboot

There are two main steps:
  • Unlocking the Bootloader of the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus (A9)
  • Flashing the patched boot.img and installing the Magisk Manager apk

Procedure
  • Create a folder on your Desktop and name it Hovatek
  • Download the patched boot.img for Tecno Phantom 6 Plus (Nougat) @ [ Login / Register to download free] and Magisk Manager apk @ https://github.com/topjohnwu/MagiskManag...v5.0.4.apk
  • Save both boot.img and Magisk Manager apk into the Hovatek folder, you'll be needing them soon
  • Setup ADB and Fastboot on the PC using the guide at https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-588.html
  • Extract and copy the boot.img (from the Hovatek folder) into the same folder as the fastboot.exe and adb.exe
  • Unlock the Bootloader of the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus (A9) using the guide at https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-16225.html
  • Connect the phone to the PC via USB cord while switched On and boot it into Fastboot (as instructed in the Bootloader unlock guide; don't forget to re-enable OEM unlocking and USB Debugging)
  • When the phone enters Fastboot, flash the patched boot.img to the phone by typing the command below then pressing Enter

    Code:
    fastboot flash boot boot.img

  • Reboot the phone to Home Screen using

    Code:
    fastboot reboot

  • Once the phone boots to Home Screen, copy the Magisk Manager apk from the Hovatek folder to your phone then install
  • Launch Magisk Manager and Root checker to verify root
  • To unroot, simply flash the stock Tecno Phantom 6 Plus Nougat boot.img @ [ Login / Register to download free] in fastboot

Credits to Bryanthuku for the patched boot.img

You need to flash stock boot.img and recovery.img for your build number else it could brick your phone
