They also do not get a DM verity message.

In your thread about the Android 9 version, check if the device has a vbmeta partition. If it does (and I expect it to) then refer to https://www.hovatek.com/blog/dm_verity-i...-bootloop/ . You'll need to flash a blank vbmeta.

Quick question here.
After flashing the TWRP, I believe you attempted to boot straight to recovery mode.
Did it take you straight to stock recovery or it froze then booted up to home screen after which the next attempt to boot to recovery showed stock recovery?

flash back your stock recovery and check that the device can boot into homescreen
then patch boot on your device using the guide @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21427.html
then retry the twrp

Quick update, I was able to obtain root by patching and flashing the boot.img partition with the Magisk guide, but the twrp that you gave me still boot loops after the flash (ie, flash and immediately reboot the phone into recovery by selecting recovery in the boot menu). We are so close, I can taste it!

It bootloops that recovery.

carry out this test, download latest android image kitchen
unpack your stock recovery, delete /ramdisk/verity_key file then repack the recovery
try flashing the output then confirm if the device is able to boot to stock recovery or bootloops
