Quick guide : how to boot the linux OS using a linux live USB flash drive on a windows PC

  1. Shutdown windows
  2. Insert the live linux USB flash drive into a port
  3. Power on the PC and enter the BIOS (either search online for the specific key for entering BIOS)
  4. Locate boot order within BIOS > move USB or Removable devices (depending on what you see on your PC) to the top of the list
  5. Save and exit BIOS
  6. The PC should now boot from the USB flash drive
  7. For Windows 10, hold shift then click Restart > Select Use a device then click EfI USB device

Important Notice
  • You can use the guide to create a bootable USB for any linux distro e.g ubuntu, kali linux e.t.c
  • Live mode requires (~ 2.5 GB) less amount of free space compared to persistent mode (~ 4 GB)
  • Live mode is essentially the same as an installation CD / DVD so when you boot into a live mode USB, ensure to select the option for live boot so you don't go installing the OS and end up mistakenly erasing your entire internal hard drive
  • Live mode doesn't require user login details, it uses the default user of the linux distro e.g if you're using ubuntu then the default username on live mode is ubuntu
  • If you ever encounter the error message "E: Unable to locate package" then Go to menu and search for software & update > Ubuntu Software > Downloadable from the internet, tick the appropriate boxes (repos)
    then close and re-run command

I am stuck at white dot after selecting ubuntu directly, 2nd line too. I think the problem is Ubuntu does not support my Legacy BIOS, it supports UEFI best, how to fix it?
