On step 24 of https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21970.html it mentions that items highlighted in pink are not needed when flashing.

now when i look at my scatter file in WWR 2.51 i see that nvram and nvdata are highlighted pink, aren't both of these partitions needed to ensure the device has a valid IMEI number hence arent they crucial in flashing?

Its advisable to flash nvam and nvdata ONLY when you have null IMEI / NV issues. Its not like factory firmware ship with nvram and nvdata anyway (you'll usually find them in backups).

If you don't have null IMEI, don't flash nvram

But does not flashing the nvdata/nvram partitions cause a null IMEI?

No.
You can safely leave them out when flashing and your IMEI won't be affected.
The only times you flash them is when they've been corrupted / wiped; resulting in null IMEI

How is it possible to end up with a null IMEI?

If you wipe nvram partition or flash an incompatible nvram file

you mention if you wipe nvram partition it will cause a null IMEI, but you also mention you can leave flashing the nvram partition as it won't affect the IMEI, which is contradicting hence doesnt make sense?

Its not contradicting at all.
When flashing, you can choose which partitions to flash , True or False?
You don't have to flash the nvram or nvdata partitions. Just leave them and flash the rest.
In a case where you did a format (which wipes nvram and nvdata) or you flashed nvram / nvdata partition and it results in a null IMEI then you have to flash good nvram and nvdata to fix it.
I hope its clear now.
