[Tutorial] HOW TO FIX MISTAKENLY SETTING A DEFAULT PROGRAM FOR SHORTCUT FILES (.lnk)

#1

At times one might mistakenly set shortcut files (.lnk) to be opened by a particular program eg Firefox or notepad etc or maybe it was set by a virus.
you'd notice that your shortcut links on your desktop would have the icon of the particular program as seen in the pic below.

Naturally Set Assoiciations doesnt offer "Unknown Application" as an option in Default programs
To fix this, simple follow the steps below carefully.
* Press WinKey + R
* type regedit and press enter
* navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk

* OpenWithList should contain only:
  (Default) | REG SZ | (value not set)
* OpenWithProgids should contain only:
  (Default) | REG SZ | (value not set)
  lnkfile | REG_NONE | (zero-length binary value)
* Make sure there is no subkey/subfolder
  UserChoice (if you see it, right click on the UserChoice > Delete)
* Restart your system
