    A friend of mine died and his family gave me his iPad but the phone keeps telling me to activate using the owners email address. Is there any thing I can do to activate my new iPad

    you'll need to get access to the owner's email account to click the activation link then.
    if you know the email address then you can try the forgot password option. if you're lucky, the person would've used a phone number / email address which you can get access to as the recovery option

    no. you can reset it to factory state with iTunes. just follow https://forum.hovatek.com/thread-6454.html

    All the iTunes stuff didn't get to work. Is there a way to hard reset it to factory settings?

    You need to get access to the persons email then.
